This study aims to identify the challenges faced by students of SMP Negeri 1 Mempawah Hulu in reading comprehension and the factors that influence it. This study applies a descriptive method with qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. A closed questionnaire survey was conducted on 30 grade VIII students selected using purposive sampling techniques, while semi-structured interviews were conducted on four students to strengthen the results of the study.
The results showed that grade VIII students faced difficulties in understanding texts and identifying main ideas. In addition, the lack of motivation to learn English contributed to the low motivation of students to improve their reading skills. One of the main factors that causes difficulties in reading comprehension is the lack of extensive reading activities. This limitation has an impact on students' ability to identify important information and connect various parts of a text to understand the arguments presented.
This study is expected to provide insight for English teachers regarding the challenges faced by students and the factors that contribute to their difficulties in reading comprehension, so that they can help in designing more effective teaching strategies.
